Design Fellowship 2026
Archetype AI
About Archetype AI
At Archetype AI, we are building the foundation for Physical AI: intelligence that understands and reasons about the physical world through sensor data.
Our foundation model is trained on hundreds of millions of real-world measurements. Instead of learning only from documents, it learns from the behavior of the world itself.
The result is a system that can interpret physical environments, not just language.
This shift introduces a fundamental design question: If AI is no longer confined to a chat interface, what does interaction look like? How do people work with intelligence that is continuous, ambient, and situated? How do you visualize what the model perceives? How do humans and AI build a shared understanding of what is happening in the world?
About Role
We are launching a 10-week Design Fellowship for students who want to help explore these questions.
Each fellow will be matched to a focused project, scoped for the duration of the program. These are not speculative exercises. The work ships, informs product direction, or advances our understanding of how people relate to Physical AI.
You will collaborate closely with researchers, engineers, and designers. You will build working prototypes using the latest advances from our R&D team, at the intersection of the digital and the physical.
Who We're Looking For
We welcome applicants from a range of disciplines, including graduate students in Design, HCI, Robotics, or related fields.
This role is a strong fit if you:
Move fluidly between design and engineering
Are as comfortable in code as in concepts
Enjoy working on ambiguous, early-stage problems
Use prototyping as a way to think and tell stories
We are based in San Mateo and expect fellows to be in the office a few times per week.
More than anything, we are looking for builders: people who are curious, resourceful, and drawn to problems without established playbooks. People interested in what AI becomes when it leaves the screen and enters the world.
How to Apply
Please submit:
-
Portfolio or work samples
(website, PDF, GitHub, or video)
-
Statement of interest (max 300 words)
What draws you to Physical AI? What would you want to explore?
