The Linux Engineer is responsible for supporting, troubleshooting, configuring, patching and other software updates to Silversky’s Linux server and VMWare environment. They are responsible for availability, redundancy, and recoverability of critical internal services and applications as well as customer facing services and applications. The Linux Engineer maintains and is responsible for server lifecycle management and ensuring hardware and software versions are compliant with Silversky’s End-of-Life policy. They respond to critical system alerts and escalated customer tickets to maintain our Service and Operational Level Agreements.
What you’ll be doing:
- Performing software installations and upgrades to Linux systems and maintain them in accordance with established policies, procedures, and service level agreements.
- Monitoring and tuning Linux systems to achieve optimum level of uptime and performance.
- Working with product development by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate software and hardware solutions.
- Analyzing and troubleshooting system and application performance on Linux based systems.
- Planning and scheduling server outages to perform hardware and software upgrades within a given window.
- Designing and building systems to support internal applications.
- Participating in 24x7x365 on call rotation.
What does it take to succeed in this role?
- 5+ years of experience in enterprise Linux system administration. This includes building from scratch, configuring for production level operations, and troubleshooting common Linux - connectivity issues, hardware diagnostic, filesystem issues, system boot issues, and service operability.
- 5+ years of experience in configuration and system build automation.
- 5+ years of experience implementing monitoring. Identifying server-side resources, services, and other objects that require monitoring to support server operations.
- Expert level of operational knowledge in one of the following: databases, puppet, ansible, spacewalk, or VMware.
- Strong communication skills.
- Degree in Computer Science; may be substituted by numerous technical certifications or significant years of related experience.
