Job Description:

Johnson & Johnson is hiring for a Senior Environmental Health & Safety Compliance Specialist to join our team located in Shockwave Medical Costa Rica.

Position Overview

The Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Compliance Specialist supports the EH&S Department in implementing and maintaining the Environmental Management System (EMS) in compliance with ISO 14001 and applicable environmental regulations. This role works closely with the Principal EH&S Specialist to ensure environmental programs are executed effectively, audits are managed, and compliance obligations are met. Responsibilities include coordinating EMS activities, monitoring environmental performance, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across multiple Shockwave Medical sites.
This position will support the California, Minnesota and Costa Rica sites. It also has the potential to support ISO 45001 implementation and maintenance in the future.

Essential Job Functions

  • Environmental Management System (EMS) Oversight

  • Support implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001 EMS requirements across all sites with over 50 employees.

  • Ensure EMS processes and documentation remain current and compliant.

  • Assist in coordinating management reviews and tracking environmental objectives and targets.

  • Participate in the vendor qualification program, including performing audits of suppliers and managing the approved supplier list to ensure third-party compliance with environmental requirements.

  • Audit & Corrective Action Management

  • Coordinate internal and external EMS audits; manage audit schedules and logistics.

  • Track audit findings and corrective actions to ensure timely resolution.

  • Provide backroom support during audits and maintain audit readiness.

  • Identify non-conformances, environmental issues, and compliance gaps. Lead or participate in investigations and perform root cause analysis.

  • Assessment Support

  • Conduct periodic compliance assessments to identify gaps and improvement opportunities.

  • Assist in evaluating environmental risks associated with projects, equipment, and processes.

  • EMS Support & Documentation

  • Maintain EMS documentation, including procedures, work instructions, and records.

  • Prepare and organize materials for audits and certification activities.

  • Update SOPs and related documents to reflect regulatory and operational changes.

  • Future ISO 45001 Support

  • Assist in planning and implementing Occupational Health & Safety Management System requirements under ISO 45001.

  • Support integration of ISO 45001 with existing EH&S programs when applicable.

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, 5-8 years of experience in EH&S compliance, with a focus on EMS and environmental programs.

  • Strong understanding of ISO14001 Environmental Management System standards and environmental regulations.

  • Experience supporting audits/assessments and managing corrective actions.

  • Experience with platforms such as Intelex, Windchill, or similar for document control, audit management, and compliance tracking.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.

  • Operate as a team and/or independently while demonstrating flexibility to changing requirements.

  • Ability to work with a team to develop and implement effective environmental compliance strategies and management systems including management plans.

  • Solve technical problems and develop solutions to meet environmental requirements.

  • Proven ability to influence people without authority.

  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Applies sound judgment

  • Thinks independently and objectively

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) Professional proficiency level of english.

  • Ability to travel 20–25% (international as needed)

  • ISO14001 Lead Auditor certification or equivalent preferred

  • Familiarity with ISO 45001 standards

  • There may be continuous sitting for prolonged periods (more than 2 consecutive hours in an 8-hour day).
