Neutral Beams Experimental Scientist
TAE Technologies
Do Epic Science
TAE is the world’s first private fusion energy company, founded in 1998 to commercialize the cleanest, safest, most affordable, and sustainable form of carbon-free power. We are applying science and engineering to design transformational technologies. Whether it's harnessing fusion through the science of stars, making exponential leaps in power efficiency, or innovating medical care with a novel cancer treatment: We're turning the promise of science into reality.
We’re looking for candidates who are passionate about realizing our mission: A future where all people have affordable access to reliable, abundant, and environmentally friendly fusion-generated electricity.
About The Role
We currently have an opening at our Foothill Ranch, CA (Orange County) facility for a Neutral Beams Experimental Scientist. The selected candidate will join the Neutral Beams team to operate and maintain a MW-level Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) system for plasma heating and current drive, analyze and interpret experimental data related to beam performance, and collaborate with in-house technical staff to troubleshoot hardware issues. The candidate will also participate in the design, simulation, and testing of a new neutral beam system for the next-generation fusion experiment at TAE.
- Conduct low-temperature plasma experiments
- Study/optimize ion beam optics
- Development of the new NB system for the future plasma machine:
- Simulations – beam formation, transport
- Experimental characterization of beam parameters
- Collaborate with engineering to design NB systems and test NB subsystems
- Develop diagnostics for the high-power NB systems, including secondary electron emission detectors, calorimeters, and optical diagnostics
About You
- 2-5 years of hands-on lab experience with plasma physics, ion/neutral beam experiments, or related fields.
- Experience in experimental physics labs working with neutral beams, ion accelerators, or related systems.
- Understanding of basic plasma and beam physics
- Experience with high voltage systems (above 10 kV)
- Familiarity with UHV vacuum systems
- Electronics assembly, soldering, and experience with electronics test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, etc.)
- Proficiency with Machine Control Systems interfaces
- Scientific programming experience (Python, Matlab, IDL, etc.)
- Familiarity with mechanical/thermal tension and MS Office applications
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic and challenging environment, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams
Education
- Required: MS in physics, engineering, or a related discipline.
- Preferred: PhD in plasma physics, engineering, or a related discipline.
At TAE Technologies, we consider a wide range of factors when making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and job-related knowledge, training; licenses and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements depending on the position offered (non-Sr., Sr., Lead or Manager). The compensation range for these roles are $80,000-$150,000.
