Do Epic Science

TAE is the world’s first private fusion energy company, founded in 1998 to commercialize the cleanest, safest, most affordable, and sustainable form of carbon-free power. We are applying science and engineering to design transformational technologies. Whether it's harnessing fusion through the science of stars, making exponential leaps in power efficiency, or innovating medical care with a novel cancer treatment: We're turning the promise of science into reality.

We’re looking for candidates who are passionate about realizing our mission: A future where all people have affordable access to reliable, abundant, and environmentally friendly fusion-generated electricity.

About The Role

The Junior Operator is a member of the Operations group, which focuses on organizing, staffing, and operating TAE’s experimental facilities. The group is part of the Experiment section of the C-2W program in TAE’s Fusion division and the Junior Operator is responsible for operating, testing, troubleshooting, documenting, and maintaining Tri Alpha Energy’s C-2W experimental plasma fusion test machine and associated subsystems. Several operators who are experts in running large-scale, complex experimental equipment make up the Operations group. In addition to personally operating the machines and their subsystems, the Junior Operator provides project support for the physics and engineering departments.

  • This is an entry level position in machine operations involving plasma fusion research.

  • The candidate will act as the machine Operator In Charge (OIC), and provide subsystems support, as well as performing maintenance and equipment assembly.

  • Job responsibilities will be about 70% Operations, and 30% project work with other related work units, as appropriate for the skill sets and interests of the Jr. Operator, as well as the needs of TAE.

  • The OIC must be capable of multi-tasking while paying meticulous attention to details regarding the status and configuration of the machine.

  • The OIC is also responsible for operating the Emergency Safety System, while following and enforcing safe work practices in an industrial environment.

  • The position will also involve some shift work on evenings and weekends, with the possibility of 24/7 on-call off-hour support in the future.

About You

  • Proven experience troubleshooting and resolving machine-related problems.
  • Ability to proactively identify and address operational and safety issues.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Project experience of any kind is highly valued.
  • Some knowledge of and experience with operating, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining complex technical systems, in a manner that is safe to personnel and the environment.
  • Worked as a member of an operations group, project team, work unit or technical support staff.

Education

  • Required Education: B.S. Physics or Engineering Discipline or equivalent experience

  • Preferred Education: M.S. Physics or Engineering Discipline

Physical Requirements

  • Climbing
  • Stooping/Bending
  • Working in cramped spaces
  • Lifting/carrying heavy items
